Cone 6 Suite

Based on prototype Suite 6, exhibited at 'lightworks II',
Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery, Launceston, 1996
Suite 6 prototype reproduced in the exhibition catalogue cover
(lightworks II - recent work by Penny Smith, 1996, ISBN 0 7246 4540 3)
(See below)

2002, ceramic stoneware, porcelain, appr. 160 x 135 x 35 cm

The bases are made from Australian stoneware clay, bisque fired and treated with a manganese dioxide wash, and fired again to 1100 °C.
The tops are slip cast in plaster moulds which have been decorated with rubber latex resists, and cast in a specially designed 'mid-range' porcelain body from Limoges, France - unglazed and single fired to 1200 °C.

Work commissioned from the artist by Esa Jaske in 2001.

1. Bases are press moulded into plywood moulds - 2 halves joined.

2. Liquid latex laid into plaster moulds and allowed to set to provide areas of resist (for the tops - this to provide the decorative texture, as well as providing thick/thin areas of the porcelain - to allow for different qualities of light transmission)

3. Moulds are then fitted together, liquid porcelain poured in and drained (once required thickness has been achieved)

4. Shows how the moulds sit in a rough construction that enables Penny to handle and pour the heavy, clay laden moulds on her own

5. Shows a leatherhard piece (with latex picked out to reveal the pattern) sitting in its mould.

Artist Statement

My practice has always explored the potential of industrial ceramic processes, such as slip-casting, jigger/jolleying, CNC milling,
decals, etc. to the production of limited editions as well as one-off products within a small scale studio set-up. My prime aesthetic
concerns have been with the exploration of form through the use of the multiple, and to develop a range of techniques by which these
can be created through dissection, manipulation and additions. The most current series has continued from the work originally started
at the Arabia factory, Finland in an attempt to produce groups of works that create a strong sense of animation in their relationships
with each other.
